CCFA was represented at the two-day meeting of the National Farmed Animal Health and Welfare Council in late November in Ottawa.  Reps from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency attended, as do the federal and provincial Chief Veterinary Officers.  Dr. David Fraser from BC reported on his Animal Welfare Committee’s work. Recent government cutbacks to research in farm animal welfare was cited as a problem.

Antimicrobial resistance was a primary topic, too.  Canada currently lacks legislation prohibiting widespread use of antimicrobial drugs administered to farmed animals to encourage growth.  This must change, since these valuable drugs are developing resistance to infectious diseases.
